How to install a Torque Washable Car Cabin A/C Filter on cars with enclosed filter housing

Determine if your car can accept car cabin filter. When you open your car's glove compartment, you will see that there is a fixed cover in between the circular blower casing and intake air vent (red dotted line on the picture).  If you see an embedded line on the cover, it is an indication that you can cut the ABS plastic and install a cabin A/C filter.

What you need to cut the plastic cover:

1. Safety cutter
2. Plier
3. Sand paper

Procedure:

1. Use the safety cutter to cut along the line until you can pry the plastic cover open
2. Use the plier to help you out take out the cover, make sure you only cut the rectangular cover
3. Use sand paper to smoothen the opening

There you have it! Your car is now ready to receive Torque Washable Car Cabin A/C Filter!

You have two options to cover the opening after you install the filter:

1. Purchase a cover from your car dealership, cost is between Php 500 to Php 800; or

2. Use packaging tape to secure the filter, it is behind the glove compartment anyway

Many automobile makers are putting cabin air filters in later models of their cars and trucks. A cabin air filter removes dust and other debris, such as pollen, from air passing through the vents. Toyota has made changing the cabin air filter a fairly quick and painless process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions:

1. Open the glove box and remove any papers and other items you might keep stored there. Locate the small screw on the lower right side to which the stop arm of the glove box is attached. Remove the screw.

2. Slip the loop of the arm off the cylinder after the screw is removed. This will free the entire glove box. Squeeze each side of the glove box to allow it to be pulled past the tabs and remove the entire compartment.

3. Locate the cabin air filter housing behind the glove box. Squeeze tabs on the plastic cover toward each other and pull off. Pull the filter frame straight out. Keep the filter face up to prevent any debris caught in the filter from dropping onto the floor or the seat of the vehicle.

4. Take out the old filter from the filter frame and insert your new Torque Washable CAF . Make sure the UP arrow is facing up toward you, and that the sides of the filter are slipped under the tabs on either side of the frame.

5. Snap the plastic cover back onto the filter frame. Hook the glove box back onto its hinges. Squeeze the sides again and push the box back into place until the tabs catch behind the dash. Reattach the loop of the stop arm onto the cylinder and replace the screw.

Tips & Warnings
- If you are changing the cabin air filter on a Toyota Highlander, you can remove the loop of the stop arm from the cylinder without removing the screw.

- Make sure your Toyota model and year is equipped with a cabin air filter and that you have purchased the correct replacement filter before going through the work of removing the glove box.

- Clean cabin air filters every 10T KM or so. Remove the filter and shake it out often to clean debris between replacements.

- On late-model Toyota Highlanders (2006 and after), the glove box drops out of the way after the stop arm is detached to allow access to the cabin filter frame without removing the entire compartment.

The cabin filter in your Honda automobile cleans all of the air that comes in through your ventilation system. If not changed on a regular basis, dirt and debris can cause reduced air flow, mold and nasty smells.

Things You'll Need:
- Replacement filter

Instructions:

1. Pull open the glove box and remove the plastic stoppers located at the back on each side. Press in on the outside of the stopper, towards the interior of the glove box; you'll feel a pop and the stoppers will come free. Close the glove box.

2. Remove the glove box from the dash. Open the glove box and pull it towards you, though some models like the 2000 Accords require pulling the glove box up, then towards you.

6. Find the removable access door on the air box and remove it. This door should be relatively narrow, with a tab on the top and a hinge on the bottom. Pull up on the tab and the access will swing forward and come off.

7. Remove the old cabin filter. Some models like the Civic and CR-V have two small filters while Odysseys and Pilots will have a single, large filter. Remove any debris from the interior of the air box while you have the filter out.

8. Put the new Torque Washable cabin filter in and replace all panels, screws and bolts in the reverse order that they were taken out.

Tips & Warnings
A small, flat head screwdriver will help with prying some of the stubborn trim panels loose; wrap some electrical tape or similar tape around the head the help prevent scratching the trim..Your local Honda dealer can do all of this for you, but they'll charge you around $100 to do it..Some models, notably 2005 Civics only require the glove box to be removed, while Odysseys and Pilots have a plastic support bar which must be cut out of the vehicle..Be careful when working the lower trim panel out. This panel is thin and easily broken, so take your time.

Many car manufacturers, including Hyundai, install aircon filter, commonly called a cabin air filter, in the inside air intake of the car. This filter removes allergens and other particles from the air before it enters the vehicle's passenger compartment. Replacement of the cabin air filter keeps the air you breathe inside your Hyundai clean and allergen free. This maintenance project can be completed by the home mechanic in just a few minutes, using basic hand tools.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need:
- Screwdriver set
- 1/4-inch-drive socket set

Instructions:

1. Remove the Phillips-head screws and the 10mm bolts that attach the glove box insert to the dash. Pull the release tabs on the glove box door travel stops and release the glove box door from the glove box. Slide the glove box insert out. Remove the lower dash trim panel on the passenger side of the dashboard.

2. Remove the old filter by depressing the locking tabs on the filter cover located on the front of the plastic evaporator case located directly behind the glove box. Then slide the filter carefully, out and down, to prevent knocking the dust that has been captured by the filter into the evaporator case or onto the carpet.

3. Install the new Torque Washable cabina/c filter by sliding the new filter into the evaporator case. The new filter is labeled to indicate the direction it should be installed into the evaporator. Push it completely into the case, and close the cover until the latches snap into place.

4. Reinstall the glove box insert and attach it to the dashboard using the original screws and bolts. Insert the door travel stops into their slots and push the door closed. The stops will automatically snap into place. Reinstall the lower dashboard trim to complete the project.

Most newer vehicles now have cabin air filters, and replacing them as part of the maintenance schedule for the vehicle will save money when the air conditioning is running, and will increase the quality of the air inside the vehicle. Replacing some cabin air filters can be somewhat tricky, but you can save on labor charges if you do it yourself.

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You'll Need:
- #2 Philips head screw driver
- 12 mm socket with ratchet and 3-inch extension
- Shop vacuum (optional)

Instructions:

1. Remove the glove box. Unclip the dashboard strip and unscrew both screws. Release the tension clips and gently pull on the glove box and slide it out. Unscrew the glove box light fixture located at the top.

2. Remove the plastic kick panel located under the glove box. Simply pull down and then out and also remove the panel to the left of it by removing the clip.

3. Unfasten the wire harnesses attached to the white junction box.You must release the black levers on each of them to unlock them, then gently twist the white clips to swing down the junction box and remove the harnesses located on top.

4. Make sure there are no more wire harnesses attached to the white junction box, and gently wriggle it out. Using the ratchet and socket with extension, remove both 12 mm bolts that hold the bracket to the junction box and swing it towards the right to make some room. Unclip the gray wire located on the left, and remove the four screws on the panel and move that out of the way.

7. Replace both plastic kick panels and reconnect the glove box light. Replace glove box and make sure there are no wires from the harnesses in the way. Also make sure the retaining clips are locked in the proper place. Replace the dash strip.

This is another 15 minute job that just might help your allergies a little, might keep the interior of your Tribute (or Escape) a little cleaner. It for sure won't break the bank.

Things You'll Need:

1. Torque WACAF, Note: Mazda and Ford bot installation procedure is exactly the same.

Instructions:

1. Turn your Tribute or Escapes key on and then turn on the windshield wipers. Turn the key off when the wipers reach their full 'up' position. This allows you to get to some screws a little easier.

2. Along the base of the windshield on the passenger side you'll see some plastic caps that cover phillips type screws. Remove the plastic caps using something like an eyeglass screwdriver or pointy object. Be careful you don't let these caps fall into the engine compartment or they're liable to vanish into the land of laundered socks, favorite pens and reading glasses. Replacements at your local Mazda or Ford dealer will cost you 50 pesos a piece. ( Mazda part # EC01-50-819A Cap, Cowl should you need replacements )

3. Remove the screws under the caps and pop the hood

4. Along the front of the plastic cover you just removed the rear screws from you'll find half a dozen more screws. Remove them by pressing 'up' from the bottom while turning with a phillips type screwdriver. You can use a flat bladed screwdriver to do the pushing. Once the screws are removed just pull up the keepers and stash everything in a safe spot.

5. Remove the cover. Under the cover you'll notice another good sized black box. This is the air box. Slide the top cover of the box forward and remove it. Now you're on target. This is where the filter will go.

6. Insert your new Torque Washable CAF filter. It will be a nice snug perfect fit. With the filter in place slide the cover back on, install all other parts in the reverse of the way you took them apart.

7. You might want to make a note someplace in your maintenance records to check the filter in a year and see if it needs cleaning. In some parts of the country these things collect all kinds of pollen, seeds and other things that float through the air. Off roaders will probably collect a lot of dirt. Many of us will be able to use the same filter for years.

and reverse the procedure to close.

GUIDE TO PROPER CARE AND WASHING

  • This washable car cabin air-conditioning filter is designed to be re-used up to more than 5 times at every 10,000 kilometer intervals.
  • This gives the user a substantial amount of savings as compared to using a Stock / OEM cabin filter which is completely disposable after every 5,000 kilometer of use.
  • The filtration efficiency of this unique product is within the range of 25% to 60% without compromising the volume of air that will pass through it compared to a stock filter rated at 15% to 20% and is disposable immediately after a single use.

Washing Procedure

  1. Remove the filter module from the car filter casing, normally located behind the glove compartment.
  2. Remove the screw on the side of the frame.
  3. Take out carefully the filter media.
  4. Air, Vacuum or dust the filter from the bottom side up.
  5. Spray it with water
  6. Soap it (DO NOT SCRUB), dishwashing liquid can be used, do not use solvent.
  7. Rinse and let it dry, force drying can be done but like other filters, air drying is recommended.
  8. Insert the cleaned filter media on the frame and screw to seal
  9. Insert the frame inside the filter housing and place back the cover

Notes:

  • Though the filter can be re-used and washed, it all depends on how the owner would like to clean and how rough will it be washed to extend its serviceable life.
  • It is important to keep in mind that to maintain your air conditioner filter more efficient the more often it will need to be cleaned.
  • When it reaches its serviceable life, you just need to buy a filter element from your local supplier to replace the old one at a cheaper price and just insert it in the aluminium frame.
